Happy Solstice!

Summer is finally here. Can't you tell? I know Seattle still has cold, gray skies and the weatherman is calling the month Junuary, but it's summer now!

Huzzah!

Why does summer officially start at the solstice? Shouldn't that be more towards the middle of summer?

The solstice is when the sun reaches the zenith of its yearly cycle. Summer is when it's hot out.

Just like the hottest part of the day is in the afternoon and not at 12 sharp, the hottest part of the year is after the solstice.
