Freedom in the World

In which of the following countries would you rather live:

Burma
Cuba
Libya
North Korea
Sudan
Syria
Turkmenistan
Uzbekistan
Tibet
Chechnya

These are the countries (and territories) ranked as the least-free places in the world by the Freedom House, with a maximum 7 score in both Political Rights and Civil Liberties. I guess the real question isn't whether you want to live there, but what should we do to improve democracy and freedoms in these lands?

Just so you know, the best countries (with a minimum 1 score in both categories) are:

Andorra
Australia
Austria
Bahamas
Barbados
Belgium
Canada
Cape Verde
Chile
Costa Rica
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Denmark
Dominica
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Kiribati
Latvia
Liectenstein
Lithuania
Malta
Marshall Islands
Mauritius
Micronesia
Nauru
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Palau
Poland
Portugal
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Lucia
San Marino
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Taiwan
Tuvalu
United Kingdom
United States
Uruguay
Puerto Rico

I would rather live here, Canada or Australia. Living in Burma, Cuba, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tibet or Chechnya might give a person a little more respect for their surroundings though.

Hi, I am highly interested in the ongoing situation in Tibet; in the wake of such violent dialogue on US immigration I have used Tibet as portrait of colonialism… Check it out if you want.

The Amazing Race has visited a lot of countries, but I don't think it has visited any on your list of least-free nations. But I realized the other night that Amazing Race is fun and interesting because there are so very many free nations around the world. A generation ago, the AR producers would have been much more limited (no Russia, China, Poland, East Germany, Yugoslavia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Romania, etc.). Has AR been to mainland China? They could now, even Tibet.

They went to Beijing and the great wall a few years ago. Hong Kong, too.
