Bird in the Hand

The grass may look greener over there, but really it's not. That's just an optical illusion.

Look around you. Do you have it good? A steady job that supports you and generally keeps you interested? Don't throw it away. I mean, sure, it ain't all beer and skittles, but they wouldn't call it work if it was fun.

Me? I've got a good thing going with the whole being-an-architect, so I shouldn't abandon that to try to become an author or a photographer. Those professions are finicky and hard. And since I didn't have to struggle to get where I am now, why should I struggle on the chance that maybe I might get a few bucks (certainly not enough to support myself) by selling my writing or my photos? It just doesn't make any sense to do that.

So get back to work.

Which is why I continue to write and take photographs. I just don't expect to make a living from it.

I dreamt of being a professional author and/or photographer, because that would be an easier daily schedule. But no it wouldn't. I'd have to work twice as hard and three times as long...

But it would be what you love.

Pshaw. Love? I'm supposed to do what I love? A lot of television would be watched. A lot of pizza would be eaten. Every couple days, I'd go for a run or a hike to burn off some energy. Every couple days, I'd write a few pages or scribble some ideas, maps, whatever pops into my head. No novels would get finished. No photographs would be sold. My walls wouldn't get painted. I wouldn't have a job, so I'd have to sell my condo...

Discipline. All it takes is discipline. Which is where the not-having-to-try-very-hard-to-get-to-this-point-in-life comes in.
